Emporio is the largest village of Santorini, located in the center of the southern part of the island, at a distance of 12 kilometers from Fira. It is built in the plains, at the foot of Prophet Ilias. The village was probably called Emporio (= trade) because it was formerly the center of commercial affairs.
Today, Emporio is a quiet settlement with beautiful houses and courtyards, many of which have been renovated, making the place very attractive. You can find many shops, cafes, bars and traditional taverns. An advantage of the village of Emporio is the fact that it is close to the village of Perissa and the cosmopolitan volcanic beaches of Perissa and Perivolos. There one can find pool bars, clubs, lively nightlife and the most popular beach resorts with many facilities. The village has wonderful blue-domed churches and small churches, including the large church of Agios Nikolaos Marmaritis, which is made of marble.
The biggest attraction of Emporio is the medieval Kastelli, one of the five fortified castles of Santorini. Inside the castle there is a church dating from the 16th century or earlier. Nearby is the “Goulas” Tower, a square building that was used as a lookout and shelter.
